Turns out that it's the rubber bush at the bottom of the steering column where it connects to the rack.
Not critical, just a bloody annoying noise. Cheap to fix, so it's going in next week. They offered to do it this afternoon but I was in a bit of a rush.
It's nice to hear the end of a story. So many posters never come back with the finale!

Well just when you thought the story was over, it has a little twist in it's tale.
I wasn't totally convinced with the diagnosis - so I got a second opinion (from a trusted friend who has 40 years experience in the motor trade).
Instead of getting behind the wheel to listen to the noise himself, he got down on his haunches and put his hand on the spring under the wheelarch. I was then instructed to turn the steering wheel to create the noise and he immediately stood up and smiled.
"Steering rack bush my arse!!" he proclaimed. "that's a busted road spring".
Getting it replaced tomorrow - cheap to fix and a damn site quicker than farting about with a steering rack.
