sounds like it's been fixed after a prang first up, did you get a hpi check? they might be sympathetic to your cause if it's been a write off in the past, but if it's not been recorded then I don't think you have a leg to stand on

private and you have been stitched up to the nines matey you did of course check to see if the seller was the official owner didn't you? and that they lived at the address they gave on the log book?

if they have then I suppose you may be able to claim from someone along the line in the mall claims court or something if it's been described as "mint" and turns out it's actually a polo, but I wouldn't hold your breath

Methinks a hastily repainted, improperly jigged write off or heavy damage repaired. It would fit with the tale of woe for a back street bodger to take a desirable[1] car that has been thrashed, bashed and trashed, probably stolen/recovered and patch it up in that way.

If it came from a dealers, you may have recourse, else get it checkd on a jig then sorry, big labour time to undo the damage done by El Tosso, make good the original body damage then spray and rust proof.

Did you do a vehicle history check before parting with wodge?, if that brought nothing back there may be some recourse there.

Private sale?, araldite in the house door locks, half a gallon of paraffin through the letter box and a note proclaiming 'next time it'll be lit'.

Won't help your case but will make you feel a little better[2].

I reckon this is his best bet, if it where legal!

It happens. I've seen N-plate Clios scrapped because of failing the MOT on rust which was so severe as to be uneconomic to repair. Citroen ZXs seem to be good rust-bug-fodder at the moment too.

Cheers - thanks for replying. I usually pride myself with judging characters pretty well (I'm a nurse after all), and the guy who sold me it seemed ok. I explained it was going to be a 2nd *family car* and I questioned him about the paint/bodywork, general reliability to which he said it was totally fine. The more I dig into the car, the more upset I get. I went for the car as it drove well, looked good (haha) had no HPI records (so I assumed rightly or wrongly it'd never been crashed/damaged) and I trusted the bloke.Well you live and learn.....and I'm 36!!

Am I right in assuming that you HPI'd it before you bought it?

If so, you've got a very good chance of getting your money back from HPI.

OK firstly, I assume you paid cash for it - did the chap seem respectable, did he live in a respectable part of the world etc.?

Have you contacted the seller since you've discovered all of this?
