From what you say it could be something to do with the oil not reaching the hydraulic followers quickly enought, esp as you say it is worse and sounds very bad then left a week or so.

Thanks for that, the noise after a week definately sounds like the engine is almost running without oil. Would that also cause hesitation from the engine when running it from cold do you think?

If so what part could I ask Renault to check when I next take it in? I know some bit's about engines but am frustrated that they don't seem to want to do anything more than flash the ECU with cocked up programs. I also think they said you can only flash them twice, and they've done that, so it could be a new [acronym:583ec4aa69="Electronic Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:583ec4aa69] when I go in to!!

Well it could do. I'm almost certain your car has hydraulic followers. If there is insufficient oil pressure reaching them for a few secs then the valves aren't going to lift properly. I assume the oil is the correct grade and filled to the max mark.

Well I can't vouch for the oil grade as it has always been put in by Renault on the services, but I'm pretty sure it's up to the brim in the tank (had no warning lights anyway), I will double check. So it would be the oil pump/pressure that I could ask them to check for the next time would it?
