renault clio humming when driving. Garage says Clutch and CV

I own a renault clio 1.2 Grande Mk2 X reg with 44k on clock. Half way to my destination a couple of weeks ago after about an hour into a 100 mile journey, at about 70mph a loud huming seemed to be coming from engine bay. I pulled over and had a good look around attempted tightening all wheels, and then carried on with the journey. The sound had dissapeared, 10 miutes later it returned. This noise was not apparent during the next week of town driving, A week later I made the same 100 mile journey and the noise was not there. The following week it returned again about an hour into this longish journey. The next week the noise became apparent allmost all the time around

When accelerating you can accelerate through it and then when you come off of the accelerator and the engine brakes it appears again. Sometimes it is there when you push in the clutch and remove it, leading the garage to believe its due to the clutch. My garage claims it appears to be a combination of the CV joint (which does knock slightly when turning hard) and possibly the clutch release bearing. The clutch doensnt appear to be slipping and the car goes into gear fine.

I would be looking at a wheel bearing first. Your symptoms do not sound like the clutch

I agree with Cheerful, though without seeing the car its hard to tell for sure. I reckon you have either a wheel bearing, possibly a CV (but usually they knock/grind under load and cornering, not when cruising along), or sticky caliper problem (sticky caliper causes pads to bind a little and vibrate, rare but I've had it on my personal car).

Usually noises that vary with car speed and sounds like howling or whining or humming are wheel bearing problems. As I mentioned in another post, I've been informed by the local motor factors that renault wheel bearings are something of a chocolate item and they keep a healthy stock of them.
