Mondeo clutch gone?

For a few days my 1995 185k Mondeo has been making a fairly loud thud/bang noise on engaging the clutch. This seems worst when engaging reverse, but I'm not sure if this is just because of less road noise etc. It has also been happening when quickly taking my foot of the throttle while in gear.

Tonight the clutch gave up completely and all there is is a whirring noise when engaging the clutch, but no drive.

Since I won't be getting anyone to look at it before Tuesday, can anyone tell me what the problem is and what the approx cost is likely to be.

The clutch, driveshafts etc are all original, and the clutch seemed to have plenty wear left.

are you sure that the cvs are all ok? put it in gear with the engine running and have a look at the shafts, both sides, both ends, if one is turning you have found the problem.

As it goes the clutch often just slips more and more without any noise to speak of. It should cost under £200 to replace the clutch.

If it's not the CV, adjusting the clutch cable might get your car mobile enough to get to a garage.

This page looks very useful for costing Mondeo repairs.

TBH, sounds like a CV to me, especially the "bang" while changing gear or= =20 the load on the CV changing.

I'd not describe the noise I got as a "whirring" noise though. More like a= =20 cement mixer full of rocks & scrap metal :-)

This is a Mondeo. Try =A3400-600!

It _may_ have a hydraulic clutch if it's a "top of the range" one.

No, they are absolute sh*t. I turn away new customers with Mondeos, simply because of all the things that regularly fail, I still have two that I repair for old customers, but new ones are told no !!

The clutch is an all day job for one man if he knows how to do the job and has good equipment. Some places do the whole job for £350 parts and labour (depends on model) The whole engine and gearbox combo with subframe has to come out, then take engine off box, then change clutch, then rebuild, then fill fluids and sod about bleeding it all (plus bleed clutch on some types) Then get the customer complain it now pulls to the left, etc. etc.

They're not all repairs from a single car Guy, if you have a problem repaired on a Mondy you can send in the figures and he'll update the site ;)

Amen to that. A friend of mine who is a mechanic himself sold his MK1=20 for =A3100 with a knackered clutch as its such a crap job. In the whole=20 of Bridlington he couldn't find a single garage who'd do it. He even=20 offered another mate =A3150 backhander to change it and the guy wasn't=20 interested.

I saw that, but even so it's the number of expensive bits dying at what I'd call low mileage. Under 100,000 and bits of the fuel injection and suspension are falling over.

Didn't Henry Ford build his worldwide empire on the premise of 'reliability and cheap and easy maintenance'? If Vauxhall could design an engine in which some previous posters to this group reckoned that they could replace the clutch in under 40 minutes, then surely Ford could do the same.

'reliability

Yup then vx realised that they could save 2p per gearbox in manufacturing and make more ££'s on maintenance by making the clutch harder to change....

It must be a Catch 22 situation for manufacturers, on the one hand if they make a car that's too reliable and long lasting they don't sell many new ones, and on the other if they make something that's unreliable and costs an arm and a leg to repair then they get a stinking a reputation, with the result that established and potential new customers won't touch them with a barge pole.

Thanks for all the replies.

A friend had a look at the car earlier one, and he reckons that it's what he called the 'spline' going to the gearbox that had worn.

Since the car isn't worth much, it this likely to be a big job? Is it 'dobable' by a good DIY mechanic?

Sorry if my explanation is a bit vague, but I wasn't actually there when he looked at it, and neither of us know a great deal about it!

That is possibly what has happened, a more common explanation would be that the centre of the clutch plate has suddenly torn out. Whichever it is, the complete lot has to come out, the difference will be that if the shaft has gone the cost will go up dramatically. The average mechanic cannot do this job, most clutch places won't be able to either. You need a clutch and gearbox specialist, phone them and ask. Likely quotes are 350 minimum, plus about another 200 if the splined shaft is gone.

I thought it was built on "make them cheap and fast, sell them quick" myself. Which explains the quality of certain products.

I was thinking of the model T, which apparently had an excellent reputation for robustness and easy do-it-yourself maintenance with farmers and such like.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Stuffed" saying something like:

SNIP

This is a Mondeo. Try £400-600!

More snip

I recovered a mondeo today. It was stuck in top gear. It had also had a clutch a couple of weeks ago. There is now much discussion about how much oil the box should have. Like "some" :-((
