That sort of thing is self limiting - lack of response from one sensor can be seen. Conversely, a friend with a Renault Scenic ruined his engine because he trusted the "Oil Level Fine" message on the dash and never looked at the dipstick[1].

Understandable. When I was working, getting industrial plant working, there was a time when automation was becoming more and more common, and maintenance staff tended to just sit in front of the screens, not venturing out amongst the machinery, and so not hearing screeching bearings running dry, drive belts flapping, air whistling out of holes, etc.
