Two sets of friends had earlier Scenics (both 02 plate, one a 1.6 the other a 1.8) both replaced them with new ones - at 142,000 miles for the 1.6! Neither had any major problems. One now has an 08 the other a 10 plate. The 08 plate has had key problem with the silly credit card ignition key but nothing else. The 10 plate no problems at all.

There used to be (about 18 months ago) a guy who would rebuild the keys for £25, which is a lot cheaper than getting a new one from Renault. He might still be around, for all I know.

I`m not a Renault lover but my son is.He`s had an 06 Scenic for at least five years.Only problem was the blank dashboard fault which affected a lot of Renaults and was an easy fix if you could solder and he had new rear discs last year for mot.Discs and hubs are a combined unit. He buys Renaults because his wife finds the clutch pedal nice and light to push.

I'm a bit curious about this 'dashboard fix' as I am indeed an electronic engineer. What is involved should it happen?

I am in the trade of repairing cars.

I guess 90% of Renaults are largely fault free. The ones that come through the shop rarely leave without a LARGE bill, some are un-economic to repair (autobox,wiring faults, electronic issues, fuel system, engine lunched itself). Last one was an 07 with 50k on it, autobox dead, having had £1200 spent on it for injectors the month before.

If bought at the right money and you can afford to through it away should it play up, then go right ahead, but be in NO DOUBT that it will be 100% problem free.

For my money, I'd buy a Zafira with the 1.9CDTI, have the swirl flaps removed, and an EGR-delete tune. Very underestimated cars.

No thanks. Bought a Corsa a few years back it put me off Vauxhall for life.

Generally I avoid anything French, however, some creep through. A very elderly customer has a quite late very low mileage Grand Scenic petrol auto, he asked me to have a look the other day because, while driving, the display had read: 'Check Gearbox' The message went away on its own.

I plugged the code reader in, which came up clean. There is no sign of any leaks underneath and a road test seemed normal.

Any ideas on what 'check gearbox' might be triggered by?

on old citroens xantia etc the light came on with no faults but they require a oil change there is a counter on our cars maybe the same on that ? confused me for a while :(

I wondered that, but it is very low mileage, even fussy vehicles generally only require auto oil change at 60k up, this is less than half that, the warning has not re-appeared in the last few weeks. If it comes back I will pass him on to a Renault dealer.

They do have an 'oil degradation' sensor in the box, so a change could well be due. I would!!

in that case, I will give it a change next time it comes in, on the day that the warning came up it was very hot weather and he had been quite a distance, so perhaps the fluid has thinned a bit?

But, being French and involving French electricity, do they have a sensor degradation sensor?

Since I had one of my tyre pressure sensors fail, 'she' tells me, every time I get in the car, that the tyre pressure warning system isn't working, so it might be possible.
