Rover 418 SD - Opinions

Hi!

I've seen a Rover 418 SD for sale, and I was wondering what is the general opinion on these cars. Are they reliable? Parts expensive or hard to get? Any issues I should look out for? It's an 'M' reg, and has 80,000 miles on the clock. Apparently the cam belt has been changed recently.

Thanks in advance!

Traded in an old 1994 model with 170k on it.... was tested for 8 mts and Between Myself & staff we left it with 225k on it in something less than a year...... never missed a beat.... gearbox gives a bit of grief in some..... within the trade they don't hold value.... but who gives a damn.... runs, goes and does the job..... It uses the Peugeot/Citroen lump which is good.

It is generally regarded as the least refined installation of the PSA diesel, but it is a good car, especially as they are cheap

I've run a 218 SLDT for 4 years, and my daughter had a 218SD for a while (these are the hatchback equivalents of the 418). Non-turbo versions are a bit sluggish, even for me, but I actually prefer driving them as there isn't the uneven response you get when the turbo starts to allow extra fuel. No problems with parts, and there are now quite a few appearing in scrapyards. 50mpg (carefully checked) around town, and up to high fifties on a long run. Sills and rear arches are starting to go on some older ones, and check for rust across the top of the windscreen and under the external plastic screen pillar trims.

Check the rear suspension void bushes. Some MoT testers are very hot on them, and they can be a bit of a pig to replace, though it can often be done without removing the arm. (Haynes is wrong on this one).

Overall, a decent, under-rated car, now available very cheaply.
