Won't turn over after flat/faulty battery, on turning the key to second position there's sounds of life, an actuator/electric motor sound but trying to start I don't hear the solenoid click, there's a faint 'singing' or whistling sound from under the bonnet as well.

Battery has been replaced but step dad had disconnected the old battery (without my knowledge) while we collected the new one so off for over an hour, could it be the immobiliser causing this and how do we reset it if so?

is the battery good and charged the right way? and is the battery connected the right way round with all its leads (if appropriate). the whirr will be the fuel pump I would guess, lack of starter might be : auto interlock, clutch interlock (not common in uk cars, but it fooled me on something odd a few years ago) You could try a bump start if manual to rule out everything except starter faults.

the immobiliser is via the key which is paired to the ecu, reprogramming keys is a dealer/specialist job., but that doesn't sound like your fault

Yes, brand new, checked with a meter.

Yes.

Don't think it is, it's something moving, you can hear it as though it's opening a flap and it's definitely under the bonnet.

It is an auto so that's possible I guess.

Unfortunately it's auto and the road is an ice rink anyway so bumping it isn't an option.

Shame. I've got access to a testbook as well if I can wait until next week but he needs the car sooner.

the noise might well be a heater flap moving, lots of cars do, or it could be a throttle flap or IACV motor.

The lack of starter might easily be just a wire pulled off or similar (mondeo diesels for instance have a starter lead with a join next to the battery), if you can get to the starter then put power to the small lead to it and see if it works.

Clint Sharp brought next idea :

Double check ALL of the leads have been put back on the battery, if there are more than one on each terminal. This caught me out once.
