Rover 75 Smell of Petrol Through Ventilation

I'd appreciate some advice on what may be wrong with a 2 year old Rover

75 which has two possibly related problems.

  1. It very occasionally fails to start - opening the bonnet and then trying again has rectified this on the two occasions when it has happened.

  2. When the fan/ventilation is turned on there is an unmistakable smell of petrol coming through.

Any suggestions?

Sure it's not coolant (this might be akin to saying "Is it plugged in?" if you tinker with the car a bit)? Have a sniff at the header tank, if it's the same smell then your heater matrix is leaking.

Look at the front of the car.

Does it have a Rover or MG badge?

Yes?

There's your problem.

It's shit.

Presumably you have a fuel leak in the engine compartment - look for it. If the fuel injection system is depressurising it could make it difficult to start sometimes.
