Is it usual for these fobs to stop working after a time. mine failed to lock the car but would unlock, then nothing, have replaced battery but still no joy. Is there a cure for these ?
thanks

Sounds like the battery went flat - the fob starts locking intermittantly (needing two or more presses to lock) as a low battery warning. Have you followed the procedure for re-syncronising the fob after changing the battery? I don't have my manual to hand, but it's something along the lines of - lock car with key, then press the 'lock' button on the remote four times, a few seconds between each press. The fobs appear to do nothing until this procedure is followed, so that might be it. As I recall these fobs are bloody expensive, something like eighty quid. You can buy a refurb kit (case and buttons only) for a fiver so the innards must be worth salvaging, and there are usually a few going on ebay. New or old, you would have to get a Rover dealer to marry the replacement fob to the car.
hi yes followed the procedure in book, ie unlock with key then operate lock button on handset at least 4 times. still no luck. thanks anyway
Prepare yourself for a shock, a replacement key fob is around £90 from the Rover main dealer. I paid £85 eighteen months ago!
Transmitter £51.13 Labour £21.20 Vat £12.66 Total £84.99 Remote key fobs are the biggest rip-off in the universe. They probably cost well under a pound to manufacture and when they reach the customer, the mark up is nothing short of obscene.

Hmm. Might just be worth taking the battery out, give it and the contacts a good clean, put it back and try resyncing again a few times - you've got nothing to lose, I don't think it's possible to fix them if broken. I seem to recall it's fussy on the timing of the button presses, and I usually didn't get it first time, but it's well over a year since I changed batteries. If no joy there are a few on ebay at the moment - I assume your spare fob is working and you're not immobile?
