What really worried me is that the "expert" the BBC interviewed at the end of this piece repeated this nonsense. She claimed that the power steering would "lock" if you turned the engine off - maybe the police advisers are equally uninformed. It can't possibly be true if you think about it, otherwise there would be hundreds of people crashing every year when their engines cut due to mechanical or electrical failure.

I wonder what BMW think about it all? I haven't seen any public statements from them.

Lack of power steering could possibly cause panic for someone not aware how the steering feel without power assistance. But it's a situation that could easily happen e.g. if you run out of petrol. Everybody should try how their car feel without power assistance. It isn't a big deal, especially for a young chap like that.
