Renault Deisel still running with ignition off

Turbo failure sounds very possible - pumping oil through into the intake.

If it genuinely was low on coolant, that's not impossible as the root cause

- is the turbo watercooled on these? Giving it some hammer on a hot day...

If that is the cause what is to be done in this eventuality??

... stick something in the air intake/exhaust to block them up?

well if the engine is running wild(ie running off the oil at high revs) then do not block the exhaust off, yes you can block the inlet (if you can get to it) but i would not use anything more flexible than a block of wood. there is a lot of suction on the inlet on a high reving diesel.

Stall it. Brakes on, in top gear (at a guess), clutch out. (Dunno about on an auto though).

Trouble is that if it _is_ pumping the engine oil in and running on that, it'll run out quite quickly... and when it does...

It's not always guaranteed to work. Plus you can end trashing the gearbox, clutch and/or driveshafts.

But it certainly does sound like turbo failure. What model of van is it?

Or you could hold your foot on the brakes untill they go on fire and then roll the car over on a roundabout. Like this bloke

I'm sure this has been done to death before but why the heck didn't he turn the ignition off?? (the BMW twit, not the diesel owner).

ummm so the oil seals in the turbo start to leak and it blows oil into the inlets ? a bit disturbing that, I wander how broken the turbo needs to be before that happens !
