Second hand tyres, size change OK?

Someone's offered me 4 x 175/70 13 tyres on wheels from a MK3 Astra,

5mm min. tread depth, for £50 ONO. Will they fit on my old J reg. Cavalier, which is currently fitted with 165/80 R13 tyres, without problems? It seems to me that they're a little fatter and lower profile, is that right? Would that make a difference?

13" wheels seem small for a Cav. I had two an "F" and an "L", both had 14" wheels. Anyway, they will probably make little to no difference. If I remeber my maths your speed will probably "slightly" over read so you can go past speed cameras at an indicated 31 mph in complete safety. :-)

they would be fine, early cavaliers had up to 185/70 x 13 as standard

Don't suppose you're anywhere near Anglesey, are you? I've got a good set of 165/80 R13 Uniroyals on Cavalier rims leftover from my Mum's car. I'll take less than 50 quid too!

Unfortunately I'm at least 200 miles from you, else I'd 'ave yer arm orf, guv.

Pity. Still, now that you've reminded me, I'll try them on the works intranet again.

Since by law a speedometer only has to be accurate to +-10% an indicated

31mph is immaterial

Your posting name suits you well, doesn't it? Under Blair's new rules that he's going to try and railroad in 31mph will matter. He would like to see zero tolerance.

I became grumpy when confronted by legions of Bureaucrats who have no practical comprehension. PS The couple of speed camera prosecutions that were attempted on me have been withdrawn by the CPS as a result of my responses to them. Likewise the parking tickets I have received have all been withdrawn. I have also received expenses from the MET for failed prosecutions.(persecutions)

Well, I got 'em... or rather, I found sidewall damage to one, so in a moment of stupidity I bought 3! Now, I put two on the back last night, and now have that nice "legal" feeling, but what do I do with the other? The spare isn't too good, so I could substitute this one. However, I've now got 165/80r13 on the front, and 175/70r13 on the back. Can I mix sizes on the back (possibly) but not the front (might exercise the diff. a bit)? Ideas?

AOL.

Now you can't just leave it there... at least do an ebook and stick it on Ebay for a few quid ;o)

It's probably not legal to mix sizes left to right but it's ok to have larger on the rear. Surely you could buy a complete vauxhall with decent tyres for around 50 quid?

You won't get an MOT with cross-ply/radial on one axle, but I don't know whether it's an offence - I have not heard anything about using different sized tyres! What problem would there be mixing 165/80 r13 and 175/70 r13 on the back axle of a FWD car? On the front, I can see that it would exercise the diff, but it probably wouldn't hurt for a few miles - would it?

Plenty of cars have a space saver spare which is narrower than the wheels on the car. There are usually caveats on how far and how fast you should drive on it, mind.

I'm talking about tyres with a different diameter, not width! Well, width as well in this case....
