Old age generally. Worn/faulty pulleys and tensioners. Doing more stop start driving than motorway cruising shortens their lifespan.
The message from "dadindistress" contains these words:
Age, oil contamination, stuck idler pulleys, damage to the housing so it rubs on the outside of the belt, excess tension, not enough tension and slood.

Calling its mother "the ugliest timing belt in town"?
From a previous course I was on, it was reckoned that only 10% of cambelt failures were due to the actual timing belt failing (of which most were due to not being changed on schedule) . The other 90% were caused by other faults, such as incorrect installlation, failed idlers, water pump, tensioner, contamination.
