Sources of car batterys ?

Anybody point me in a reputable place online for car batterys ? (for a vw bora 1.6)

I was thinking it might be cheaper buying from a motorfactors as for weight of delivery.

Any advice welcomed.

When I researched this recently, buying locally was *far* cheaper.

I've never bought a battery online. Do the couriers get nervous about it?

Chris Whelan submitted this idea :

I agree for common car batteries, though not for certain other specialised types of batteries.

A VW Bora is pretty common IMHO ;-)

I've seen Tanya mentioned a few times. Don't look bad prices even with the £7.99 postage. I think they prepare them prior to despatch so at least you know you're getting a fresh battery and not one that's been sat sulphating for weeks without charge on a car accessory shop shelf.

Unless it is a sealed battery, probably the gel type, most carriers will not touch them due to the acid contained. If you buy from places like Tayna, then you might have to source the acid locally anyway. Far easier to check the local battery suppliers in yellow pages.

Are you a Costco member? If you are they do Bosch silver super duper ones for buttons with 3 or 4 year guarantee.

At one time batteries were transported and stored dry charged with the electrolyte supplied separately presumably in a suitable container for transportation. The dealer would only fill it at sale time, so you had to wait for this to be done and a further hour or so before use. Most these days seem to be on the shelf already filled - that's not really a problem as lead acid batteries have a very slow self discharge rate and will be happy for many months.

Just get one from a local motor factors - swap it there and then and they'll take back the old one, saving you the hassle of disposing of it.

Hassle? Isn't that what supermarket car parks are for?

If it's any help, I bought a Varta battery (Blue Calcium I think it was called) on Monday from a motor factors for =A340 inc. vat. It was for my Passat so might be similar to the Bora size. Three year warranty too. Al

From what I understand batteries at tanya are ready to go once they send them to you, no need for sourcing anything else, just hook it up and off you go.
