Hi my Triumph Stag's steering wheel can be pushed upwards about an inch. There doesn't seem to be any fault with the steering itself, just the play in the steering wheel. Has anyone any ideas on what it could be? Since noticing it I've done 2000 miles and there's been no problems nor any deteriation, Thanks in advance.

there will be a bush or bearing at the top of the column. it will (should ) be an mot failure. usually straightforward to replace, although it may have become misplaced, rather than failed
The top few inches of the steering column have a universal joint and clamp that allows you to change the angle of the steering wheel. There's a locking clamp which should have a small handle to tighten it. Dunno if this is true for the earliest Stags, but was the case with the
1974 car I've just disposed of.
If it's anything like my SD1 there is a plastic bearing where the column goes through the bulkhead and this wears. There are two universal joints between column and rack so this bearing is needed to support the bottom of the column.
