"Stop Leak" oil additives...?

Does anyone have any experience of those "Stop Leak"-type additives, the ones you add to the engine oil to prevent oil leaks (funnily enough)?

I have a 1993 Fiat Uno with a relatively minor (approx. 1 pint every

3weeks/750miles) oil leak, seems to be coming from the crankshaft oil seal; I'm not expecting miracles, but would spending a fiver on a tin of oil additive help things, or should just spend the money on "Gunk" driveway cleaner instead...? More importantly, is it likely to do any harm? I use 20W/50 multigrade oil, and am not expecting to keep the car for more than six months anyway.

Regards,

Andy

It does work. It stopped a small leak on my auto SD1 gearbox selector lever. Put it in several years ago. Has never leaked since. How it would cope with a leaking crankshaft seal, I have no idea. Worth trying it IMO if you intend to sell. AFAIK it won't do any harm. Mike.

Funny you should say that - it didn't on mine. The only reason I risked it was the gearbox was on the way out anyway. FWIW, changing that seal is easy - assuming you can get one on its own.

I remember you telling me how easy it was a couple of years ago when I first mentioned it. At the time I put the stuff in, It was the 'Wynns' one. For some reason I had the idea that the seal was fitted from the inside. Maybe it worked on mine because the leak was very small. Only a few drops overnight, but it was messing up my drive. Mike.
