Strange noise in Megane

Jun 18, 2004 6 Replies

Our 3 year old Megane 1.6 has recently started making a new noise - always a worrying thing. It's only audible at low speeds, a sort of 'tikka-tikka-tikka' noise which is related to road wheel speed, coming from the front wheels. Not related to engine speed, and makes the noise even when coasting. I'm guessing front wheel bearing or drive shafts, unless its a brake disc rubbing or something. It's due a service in a month ot so anyway, but it'd be nice to be able to point the garage in the right direction.

TIA

Stone in the tyre?

words:

That was my first thought, but a) I can't see one b) It doesn't sound like a stone, somehow

Sounds more like a curry stuck in the tyre!

You haven't got one in the disc have you?

Jack one wheel up and run it in gear to see which wheel makes the noise. This will also help to tell if it's noise caused by contact with the ground (i.e. like a stone in the tyre) or not.

But be careful the car doesn't drop off the jack or what have you.
