Personally I think it's a disgrace. If I tried to charge £100/hour I wouldn't

Just had the missuses BMW 525SE E34 serviced at local BMW specialist. He came and collected it in person at 8.45am did an Inspection 2 service using fully synthetic oil which I requested instead of semi- synth and genuine BMW parts. Even gave the car a wash and polish, delivered it back home at 3pm and had a chat with me about some things that had come up during service and wrote some prices for the jobs on the receipt.

The cost? A whopping £155+VAT. Chuffed? You bet I was.

nearly £200 for an oil change and a wash, that's a bargain mate.

Plus tappets adjusting etc etc.

So you have had a £4 car wash at Tesco, someone driving your car about and an oil change for £155! You must be daft!

Did you get the cambelt done in the end?

Peter

You must be as thick as s*it. Just because you go to a s*it garage don't assume everybody else does.

Did it turn out to be the 24v M50 engine then? Nice.

Peter

Is your BMW an antique with screw and lock nut adjustable tappets? Modern bucket and shim tappets never need adjusting after the initial break in period. If the shim is under the bucket then it's a cam out job and £150 is not enough. If the shim is on top of the bucket, it is easy to change but the new shim should appear on your bill. Either way something is wearing or the valve seats are recessing and need attention.

Yup..12 valver.

No...really? F*ck me, we never got taught that when I did my City and=20 Guilds 381. Must go back and ask for a refund.

Dumb as a box of rocks...

Thought you said it had a chain, not a belt? If a chain, it's a 24 valve with hydraulic tappets.

Message body reads OK here - it's the Subject that's screwed up.

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Peter Hill saying something like:

Not so. Plenty of bike engines with bucket and shim tappets need resetting. From my own experience, the revliness of the rider has a direct bearing on the necessity for shim replacement.

Chuff...bloody 7bit/8bit. Did a re-install and forgot to reset it.

Any better??

Oh I don't bloody know. Its got a chain. I haven't taken the rocker cover off so I've not counted the valves. I'll take your word on it.

If it's got a plastic cover over the entire engine - it's a twin cam 24 valve with chains.

If it's an ordinary looking engine with spark plug leads, distributor and obviously only a single cam, it's got a belt. Changeover date was '91, IIRC. Other dead giveaway without lifting the bonnet if an auto is that the later car has a five speed.

The message from Conor contains these words:

Yup, that's got it.

24 Valver :-) Hate feckin change over years. Must get a list for all makes so I can avoid them.

Cheers Dave.
