I have a 98 Renault Megane 1.4. Often when turning left I hear a rapid knocking noise from one of the front wheels. Could this be a wheel bearing or cv joint and if so how easy is the job? Do I need any special tools?

It sounds like a knackered CV joint (is it a metallic clicking on full lock?).
I'm not sure what they're like to do - I have a Megane, but I've never fancied working on it as it looks a bit of a sod - a lot of things are Haynes
4-spanner ratings (pretty much nothing on my Rover gets more than 3 spanners), and a lot of things need Renault special tool XYZ. I don't think you need special tools for the driveshafts, though, beyond something to remove the roll-pins (if fitted - I believe Renault changed this throughout the model life) which retain them.I think the CV joint gaiter on one side (can't remember which) on the Megane is also the oil seal for the gearbox, a la ancient Fiat.

If it's worse under power, probably the CV joint.
