My temp gauge has stopped working. Well nearly. Just done around 300 motorway miles and on the return journey the temp gauge went off, then occasionally we saw the bottom bar light up (digital gauge, normally 3 bars lit). No problems getting home, and there's plenty of coolant in the header tank - top of the radiator is hot, but bottom is only luke warm to touch. In car heater works - but doesn't seem that hot when I put it on max.
Any idea what could cause this, assuming the gauge is correct? Water pump?
Engine didn't smell like it was overheating, although since I got it back from it's repair I've noticed a slight burning smell from the rear of the car - I'd assumed this was overspray on the exhaust or something similar - but maybe not. Car had a bump and rear suspension and drivers side rear wing were replaced.
Anything I can test to prove or disprove?
