the end of the line for little car shops?

I have just noticed that some items such as brake pads and cam belts are coming with use before dates. This means that the little shops will not be able to take the risk on buying stock for the shelves that may become valueless after the date stamped on them. It is now also illegal to sell items such as brake pads that are not in sealed packaging, so the days of comparing things on the counter will soon be gone.

On a cheerier note, I just changed disks and pads on a Focus, what a doddle to do, largely due to the improved caliper design.

The discs are interesting in that the material has been changed to reduce staining on alloy wheels, so that is another thing to specify and another pair of discs to keep in stock.

Though blister packing would solve that.

They don't anyway. Local chains have a small warehouse that orders in from wholesalers as and when required.

================= What kind of 'shelf life' is being proposed - months or years? Are fan belts / alternator drive belts included? I always carry a spare alternator drive belt and clutch cable but I've only had one actually fail in the past

10 years or so.

If there's some kind of danger from items held too long on the shop shelf will it be necessary to discard periodically the spares in my boot and replace them with new ones?

Yes - they run the risk of becoming useful to someone who wishes to keep an elderly banger on the road - and we can't have that, can we?
