Towsure alternative

Jan 24, 2005 11 Replies

I've got nothing against Towsure and have used them a few times. However in order to do a one stop shop they don't have everything I need and hence the question.

Are there any alternatives to Towsure for trailer and camping type items?

Many thanks.

I am looking for a "legal" cycle lighting board. The only one I can see which is legal is at Halfords which is naturally at Halford's prices.

The ones on Towsure seem illegal with the wrong type of reflector and/or don't have a fog light etc. The ones on the site above also don't seem to conform to legal requirements.

It looks as if I have to get it at Halfords! :-(

Can I ask what is wrong with

it seems to me to have all the right bits and pieces there, or am I missing something?

My understanding is that only trailers should have triangular shaped reflectors. Ones for cycle carriers should have rectangular reflectors. Mind my understanding here could be wrong and I'm happy to be corrected.

Otherwise it's fine.

Whatever you do Tim, don't buy a Witter light board. I bought one to go with a towbar mounted carrier

and it blew a fuse when I plugged it in. When I investigated I found thewiring and crimping round the light fittings was dreadful. Touchingconnectors everywhere. I had to tidy it all up before it would work asintended. The bike carrier (ZX88) is really well built on the otherhand. Crying shame about the quality of the electrics. Cheers

Mind you as I found out later the Halfords one on line is cheaper than the one on the trailer parts web site.

Frankly, the dibbles would probably be so amazed that anyone had taken the trouble to use a lightboard in the first place they'd be unlikely to get upset about the shape of the reflectors.

Guy King ( snipped-for-privacy@zetnet.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

This is all the fault of the "just-clip-onto-tailgate-no-towbar-needed" bike racks - Apart from looking bloody flimsy and scary, where are you meant to connect the lightboard? I don't think I've ever seen a car with a tow socket and no bar.

reflectors.

I was going to wire a socket inside the boot. Halfords do a "free" one with a cable clamp.

I was wondering if I could get or make clamps to go on the rack arms.

Or make your own ...
