Toyota Avensis 2.0 TD A/C noise?

Could it be the aux drive belt tensioner? With the a/c engaged if it were the compressor bearings this would stop when you switch off the a/c. If it were the mag clutch bearings this would stop when you turn on the a/c.

Whip off the aux belt and spin the various pulleys by hand and check for any dryness / roughness..

No harm done in running the a/c all the time- it will prolong intervals between needing it re-gassed...

Toyota Avensis 2.0 TD A/C noise?

Have just purchased the above - 2000 'W' reg - and it has a fairly high pitched vibration or squeak that appears to come from either the A/C compressor or the idler pulley below. Switching the A/C off does not have an effect on the noise but it does seem to disipate at around 60+ MPH.

Not a lot to go on but can anyone cast any light? The lady that owned it used the A/C constantly.

Pete

Will try your suggestion next weekend Tim and report back. Thank you.
