Turning engine in Ka

Hi all,



Just tried to adjust the valve clearances in the wife's Ka. Mr. Haynes says to turn the crankshaft pulley so that piston 1 is a TDC. Fair enough.... it's impossible to get at that from above so I jack it up, remove driver wheel and wheel arch. Can I get at it now? No! Now the alternator pulley is perfectly accessible but can only see the very bottom of the crankshaft pulley as there's a non-removalble bulkhead in the way. Do I really need to get right under it or have I missed something / is there another way to turn the engine? :)

You'd done all the work just by jacking it up.

Jack one side up at the front, remove the plugs, stick it in gear and turn the roadwheel. This will turn the engine much easier than a spanner on the crankshaft.

Just have one side up in the air with both wheels attached and the car in gear. Make sure the plugs are out and you should be able to rotate the engine by moving the free wheel.

Stick it in gear and give it a nudge (assuming it's on the level).

Doh, feel a bit stupid now :) There's supposed to be markings on the pulley that tell you when it's at TDC but I guess I can figure out that myself based on which rocker arms are rocking.

You turn the engine until an arm rocks (i.e. valve opens), then you subtract the number of that valve from 9. The result of this gives you the number of the valve to set the clearance on.

e.g: valve 2 rocking = adjust valve 7 valve 5 rocking = adjust valve 4 etc

Engage first gear. Take off handbrake. Rock car until it's at right point.

not on those, you have to observe one pair of valves rocking and check the opposite cylinder (best to look in the book) the rule of nine worked on old things like anglias

I think from reading the book the rule of nine works but as you say you do it in pairs, so when 1&2 rock, check 7&8 etc... Helpfully the Ka has a diagram on the rocker cover specifying which valves are inlet and which are exhaust, where the gap to adjust is and how much they should be adjusted to. Hard to go wrong :)
