In order to check the valves I must turn the engine so I find the TDC, to be able to do that I must remove all four sparkplugs, right?

True, it just makes it easier. I *never* remove the spark plugs for a simple valve adjustment, I just go by the position of the pulley to find TDC. I used to do that with stock pulleys, and was one of the main readons I went with a degreed pulley on my later engines, cause it's easier than remembering/looking up those goofy different years pulley markings VW used.

Not at all.

Look at the pulley and turn the engine until the TDC mark is on top. Then SOME piston is at TDC.

Then remove the dist cap and look at the position of the rotor. That will be pointing to the place where the spark plug wire for the piston which is now at TDC is located.

Turn the engine 180 deg and the rotor will be pointing to the next cylinder you get to adjust.

Continue until you've done all 4.
