V40 - Annoying Rattle.

Oct 20, 2003 5 Replies

Hi,

This is on a 1999 V40.

Since the weather turned cold I have been getting an annoying rattle from the area of the passenger air vent - the one near the door not the one in the middle. If the car is warm (i.e. been parked in the sun for a couple of hours) there is no rattle. Next morning, after a cold night, its back. Having the heater on does not seem to help - I guess it may help after a long run but so far a run of 30 minutes or so with the heater on does not stop it.

Just wondering if this is a known V40 problem or if not has anyone advice on how easy it is to take that part of the dash to bits to trace the problem?

Cheers.

Roger.

It's probably a twig that's got inside the vent. The Haynes manual will tell you how to remove the dash.

That reminds me - I bought a 1994 Mondeo a month ago, and evidently it had the same rattle. Since it turned cold, however, the rattle has disappeared. Let us face it - cars are not what they used to be. I miss my Scorpio...

1994? That is what cars used to be! It's 2003 now ;-)

John, Thanks I will check that but today I had a passenger who could start and stop the noise by pushing on the dash right next to where the windscreen pillar comes down. I reckon that the noise is in fact a 'creak' rather than a rattle - though it sounds like a rattle. I have sprayed a little bit of silicone lubricant in the gap - I will see what happens tomorrow!!! Cheers. Roger.
