Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16v

Hi,

Having problems starting a 2001 Astra 1.6 16v petrol.

It worked fine this morning but this evening coming to start it it doesnt. All that happens is that it tries to start but doesn't actually turn over.

I appreciate this is not the best description in the world! Basically if you imagine the sound an engine might make if there was, say, no petrol. It's not like that, its just like the 1st part of that sound continuously.

Battery sounds fine, the pitch of the engine trying to turn over sounds right compared to a dead battery. Its got plenty of petrol in it.

It was only serviced about 500 miles ago. Current reading is 60k miles.

Have tried bump starting it (not sure whether that was wise thinking back) but no joy. Started roiling down the hill, ignition on, in gear, let clutch out and the car keeps moving but engine doesn't start.

Has anyone got any ideas on what this could be?!

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,

Stephen.

Oh dear - last time I heard a sound like that it was from my old Cavalier. The bottom end was turning over but the top end wasn't, as half a dozen teeth were missing from the cam belt. That was a non-interference engine so a new cam belt fixed the problem - unfortunately I don't think that the 16v ones are so simple.
