Vauxhall main dealers!

Hello,

I wanted the aircon regassed, over time (4 years) it has not been as effective as when new. I phoned Masterfit for some idea of how much it would cost and was told it took 3 1/2 hours and would cost a minimum of £250-00, but only £45 was for the gas. The rest was to fill the aircon with dye and leave it for a few hours, check it, then refill it. So I would be paying for those hours that the car was NOT being worked on. No doubt some "other"fault would be found during those

3 1/2hours as garages are expected to make so much from "sales".

I said I only wanted the system filled up but am not prepared to pay 1 hour labour charge for a job that takes minutes.

Can anyone recommend a decent place in the North West to take the car - not a main dealer that is led by sales figures! Or has anyone got experience of mobile services?

I use a mobile guy and he's fine, charges approx 50 quid.

Thanks for this Jason - it swiitched my CommonSense alarm back on. Yesterday I received a flyer from the dealership which sold us our 'R' reg Astra offering to check the a/c for 39.90. Hmm - not bad I thought. It has the usual 57-point "check list" which looks very impressive, and they do offer to refill the a/c and change the filter (I think ... I didn't read it too closely first time round).

I will read it extra closely 2nd time round, but in any case I usually operate the same strategy with car dealers as I do with the medical profession ... don't let 'em near your body: they're trained to find problems. (And they will create new ones in fixing the ones they find.)

John ( snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

You could extend the analogy slightly, and say it's better for them to find the problems when they're small and easily sorted in out-patients than to wait until they need a large operation to try and fix....

You will find that the majority of main dealers do not have the equipment to re-gas aircon and actually call in a local 'air-medic' themselves - and then add £100 or so onto his bill because the work has been carried out on their premises. You will get a far better job by using a mobile air control specialist from yellow pages.

Your local dealer was talking rubbish. Most masterfit programmes are voluntary but a full aircon check is around £40. It will cost extra for a regas but I cannot see why the total bill should £100. You should even get a guarantee on the whole aircon system included.
