or cam belt, also try without the alternator belt as they have an engine driven fan IIRC that can make funny noises from the bearing or the viscous coupling (could even be alternator)

It is possible, but also check the power steering pump or its pulley has not been bashed or the support bracket bent. I had this on my last Carlton as I used to go over some rough ground occasionally. The water pumps are not too dear for your engine (~£50 genuine) but change the cambelt at the same time. About 2 hours work tops.

Easy way I have found to check the source of a noise - cut a length of hosepipe and use it as a stethoscope. One end in your ear, and one end pointing at various bits of the engine while it is running, will help see which bit is making a noise. BUT be careful not to get tangled-up in the moving parts!

The scraping noise was the impellor grinding a groove in the block & the "sounds like a diesel" noise that I thought was the bad camshaft was in the most part the totally knackered bearings in the waterpump. I'm surprised the cambelt stayed on the state the waterpump was in.

Didn't take long once I'd figured that I didn't actually need to get the fan off.
