Bought my tax disc for our (new to us) car this morning at the local village PO that's only just started doing car tax this week. All I had was the slip off the bottom of the V5.

"Here, Doreen. How do I do this then?"

They only half-jokingly suggested I was a mystery shopper from the DVLA.

Local village PO's doing Road Tax . Is it a sub PO -If so when did they start doing RT . It's been a gripe of mine for years that Subs seem to do everything else except RT so you have to go and stand in a queue at a Main PO. ?? Stuart

What's the definition of a sub-PO?

This is a typical village newsagent/sweet/card shop with a PO counter inside. It looks like it's had a recent makeover - I'm sure it used to have the usual desk-to-ceiling glass partition - now it only has 18" high clear perspex walls either side of a completely open 'window' area - easily vaultable.....

I think ours is a sub. They don't do any collection or delivery from there, and for my photocard licence, I had to go elsewhere. But they've done car tax for years.

Don't get me started.

I went into my local one on on Wednesday, to find the PO bit shut.

I said "I didn't realise it was half-day on Wednesday" "Oh no, it's not" "So why's it closed" "He goes home at 12 on a Wednesday" "....."

Tried to update my driving license (paper to photo due to change of address) and get a tax disc in my _other_ "local" one.

Waited 30 minutes in the queue (an elderly couple were converting what appeared to be 5 pension books each into some new card one, including filling in all the forms, swiping them etc).

Got to the front to find that only a main PO can do driving licenses and tax discs.

So what is the _exact_ purpose of having local post offices, if all you can do is post a letter at them. They try to show themselves as the be-all and end-all for all your services, but they don't do all of them!

Next time I'll just post the whole lot to Newcastle - it's a lot less hassle. I remember that many years ago you had to produce the old tax disc in the PO to get the new one. Result was that you would risk being nicked for not displaying the disc whilst in the PO.

Why is it that the miserable cow behind the counter invariably make me feel guilty of something when renewing my tax? Also you can't even pay with a credit card and then they have the cheek to charge a 10% surcharge for a six month licence (a total of £16.50 extra). Why can't the DVLA introduce a monthly direct debit with no surcharge? At least I got an extra day for free this year (29th Feb).

There's a car parked regularly outside the shops near my house with a tax disc dated 10/03. How do these people get away with it? I was once caught by a traffic warden whilst I was collecting my new tax disc from the PO, having just returned from holiday. She wouldn't listen to reason (or even threats!) but I did manage to avoid a fine by writing to the Chief Constable.

The old people would have nowhere to go, thats the purpose...

Unless the rules have changed recently, a sub-PO has to be a certain distance apart (2 miles?) from a main PO to be able to handle VEL. Checking of document for driving licences for £4 can only be done at certain main POs, detailed on DVLA website.

Doesn't stop main PO's nearer than 2 miles to each other both being able to issue them so why shouldn't subs be able to .

I figured that to send my details off (including a passport) to the DVLA=20 would cost me =A33.60 both ways in "signed for" postage.

OTOH, I could go to the Post Office, pay =A34, and it would be done there a= nd=20 then.
