Dear Folks,
Every so often my Volvo 240 (2 litre, injected) refuses to start. It has happened three times so far. Twice it recovered itself and once I needed a jump start - when it ran instantly and perfectly.
I have checked ...
- that there is a LT supply to the coil, and a good spark at the plug end of the HT leads (checked number 1)
- that the main fuel pump fuse is good and live
- that the tank fuel pump fuse is good, though it only goes live when the engine is running and not with the ignition on and the engine stopped
- that the HT system (replaced a year or more before this problem started is clean and dry)
Has anyone any bright ideas about what might be going wrong? It's an F reg car, but in immaculate condition and with only 120,000 miles on the clock. The episodes have all occurred after heavy rain (twice) or snow (once) but it has also started and run innumerable times in such conditions without problems. On one occasion it slowly died from tickover when parked and then would not restart.
My guess is something fuel related, and I wonder if the tank pump fuse should be going live when the ignition goes on (ie at the same time as the main fuel pump does).
