weird noise from Honda Concerto

My Concerto make a weird noise when parked (not running), it sounds like a muffled distant trumpet! It can happen at any time, but I notice it more in the summer (when my house windows are open I suppose). Its not the fan, it doesn't sound like a fan noise, and possibly seems to come from the rear of the car.

Any ideas?

That'll be a vacuum in the fuel tank and a slightly poor seal on the fuel cap. When you take the fuel cap off to refill does it go "Shooooopppp" as it sucks air in? SWMBO's Rover used to do it - we kept thinking there was a duck in the vicinity.

could it be the fuel tank venting (in or out)? or more likely the cooling system drawing air back in as it cools down.

It's nothing to worry about - it's the pressure relief system on the fuel tank venting. All the early Rover 200/400 and Concertos are the same, mine did it from new. We had a car park full of them at work, on a warm summers afternoon you could hear them all talking to each other. I guess yours is an early model (89-92?) Later versions had a carbon canister/purge valve vent, and are depressingly silent.

Would an 89 Fiat Uno have one of the former?

Our old F reg one would sit there and go "Hoooooooooonk" every now and then. We always assumed it was the handbrake settling, because it came from the back end of the car.

I'd love to know the answer to this one. It wasn't just ours - we heard others of the same age making the same noise.

Pete.

Sorry Pete, I don't know the details of your Fiat, but that's exactly the right noise! If others of the same type are doing it, and it happens more in warm weather, then its a safe bet.
