What Car?

Which you could get on the Focus as well of course (witness the probably bust spring), but yeah, you're right, replacing it is taking on a bunch of risk in return for not much cash in hand each month.

She should keep the Focus.

I would. There's plenty of other ways to save money. Point her at

and especially the forums there. There's a wealth of information and help. It's amazing how much money she could save merely by changing banks/energy suppliers etc etc etc.

For example, my missus shops at Tesco. You can use £40 of clubcard points to pay for RAC membership which saves £130 a year alone.

Although AutoAid is a better deal at about £35 a year. And yes it is good cover. I spend my Clubcard vouchers on service/MoT at Nationwide, OK maybe they're not as good as a local specialist indie garage but my local one seems pretty good, I like to get my cars looked over by an (alleged) professional at least once a year, their MoTs are fair and £45 in Clubcard points for a full service is pretty unbeatable.

I've got my friend switching over to a water meter (should be cheaper), best deal on gas/elec, switching to a mobile phone that gives her all her line rental back as cashback, etc. etc.
