Wheel judder on '95 Cavalier

Now then guys 'n gals, can anyone shed some light on what is probably causing a quite severe juddering on the steering wheel at speeds in the range of 55mph to 70mph. I still have control but the juddering is certainly severe enough to make you slog along at 50mph on the motorway, and driving at that speed is quite a sacrifice for me :-). Now my thoughts are to go get the wheels balanced by my local tyre guy because the slight juddering on my Capri was totally solved by this but it was nowhere near as bad. So I thinking that maybe it could be something more serious - wheel bearings or something - any thoughts?



Appologies if I'm asking a question that's asked all the time, but I just did a search of the group and couldn't find a post that wasn't relating to juddering under braking.

Try balance first - could have lost a balance weight. Or if you have wacked a kerb - bent a rim?. Check to see if one of the tyres has a bulge in it maybe?

If it is a wheel bearing or some such - jack up each front corner in turn and try and wobble the wheels, check for placy etc. like you would when checking-over a s/h car. But balance is my bet!

Followed by wheel bearings. I once had a car that refused to stop vibrating at

60 mph despite having the wheels balanced both off and on the hubs. Adjusting the wheel bearings to remove the bit of play that had developed in them cured it completely.

knackered front lower arms, balljoints, suspension strut top mounts, deformed tyre, wheel bearings... get it to a back street mechanic and have him check it out.
