once it is visible it is too late. excision is the only real cure

sounds drastic, how about a bit of touch up paint and sell it it :)

It was. When I bought it the previous owner scraped that lower wheel arch/quater panel on his drive way and it was fixed by chips away *rolls eyes*

Is this true? My Punto has developed two bubble areas under the paint on the roof. My guess is somebody put a roof rack on it at sometime and its removed whatever rust protection it has, as they are both on opposite sides in the same place.

Both are about 1 inch long, feel pretty solid, just slightly raised and bubbly. I thought I might be able to sand off the top paint/rust and spray again (follow whatever Mr Haynes says). I must admit I was most worried (until about a minute ago) that I a DIY spray from a can would stand out a mile.

If the rust has really started on the outside and has not penetrated the panel (very hard to tell in advance), then IF you sandblast it, you should be able to save it, anything else and it will be visible again within a few months.

If the rust has come from the other side or got through,then cutting it out is the only real answer.

The only rust I've seen on a Golf IV was also due to a crap repair. Golf IVs have their faults, but rust isn't one of them.
