Window film

Hi I'm thinking of putting mirrored window film on my motorhome windows (not the driving end). Anyone got an idea how easy it is to put on to a decent standard. Thanks Dave

just follow the instructions exactly and it will be fine. the hardest bit is the cleaning ! (before fitting)

I did exactly the same to my campervan a few years ago, but with black film. I used meths in a small syphon type spray to clean the inside of the windows as best I could. Then came the tricky bit for me of cutting the film roughly to size. I am not very good with art and craft stuff like cutting to size, so I cut it slightly over size (quarter inch) and then pushed the edges into the corner better the glass and the frame/rubber seal to get a rough line to cut along. When I was happy I'd got it close enough (a couple of mm too small in places does not show from the outside), I wetted the window with water from a syphon type spray and then came the moment of great fear when I removed the backing from the film and with luck got it onto the window without it folding onto itself or touching something like the curtains of wall covering where it could pick up fibres. Once on the window I could move it about to get the best fit, sometimes pealing a corner back to apply more water from the spray if it wouldn't slide. Finally, when happy, I used a small squeegee (supplied in a separate kit I bought) to squeeze out the water working from the middle outwards. I found it very fiddly, but even my useless skill at cutting it to size looked great from the outside. I knew there were a few imperfections but they did not show at all from the outside.

I would be very interested to hear other people's detailed experiences of doing this as I still have a few windows that have not been done on my van.

get yourself a spray bottle & put some washing up liquid & water in it and spray on the windows, that way the film will "float" on the glass, it will eventualy dry leaving the film stuck fast.

Use meths, not white spirit, to clean the glass. Prick any small bubbles with a pin.

Following Conors instructions for fitting decals (the usual fairy + water to slide it around method), I managed to get the tailgate decal on my golf nigh on perfect. Bearing in mind that the decal had been under a load of crap in our under the stairs cupboard and was creased to hell, I was mightily impressed. It's not hard at all if you're patient.

Sorry, I forgot about the squirt of fairy liquid in the water. It was five years ago when I did it and my memory is appalling at the best of times.

Forget the rest, here is how you do the perfect job.

Clean the windows thoroughly with alcohol, get it from Boots the chemist, you might have to ask for it at the counter. Alcohol leaves no residue like most other cleansers. Use pure water, distilled or bottled & make a mildly soapy solution. Pure water will leave no streaks see. Now apply your film as recommended by the manufacture after you have cut it a bit larger than required. Smooth out with a rubber squeegee then switch to something in your toolbag to push the film under any window rubbers or really tight into edges or corners. If you have a bubble or two then prick them with a hypodermic syringe ( Docs surgery or Boots) & sort of suck the air out at the same time, then re-smooth with yr squeegee. Another tip is to use a hair dryer very very gently to finish off. With care You will end up with a tinted window that looks A1. I stick films v often everywhere. Regards, Beefheart.

Don't need to use a hypodermic. Merely prick the bubble with a needle or sharp blade and using a credit card or similar, work around the edge of the bubble, pushing in towards the pinhole.

And you can use meths instead of alcohol.

And you don't need a soapy solution - normal water will do.

All the above from the missus who has done vinyl signs for a living for over a decade.
