WTF

The calipers on the ZX appear to be secured by 5 sided allen bolts...

Yup, those hold the caliper together. You shouldn't need to undo them.

don't try to undo them, they are not what holds the caliper to the car

Crazy, huh? ISTR at least one of our Peugeots having its calipers secured by bolts with 5 sided heads.

I never had a need to undo them, which means that the brake pads either lifted out of the top after removing some sort of springs and clips, or that the calipers could be removed by undoing something else.

Bah. They're undone now. They're not irreversibly dismantled and I've found out that ECP have sent me the wrong pads...

Getting the right parts for a ZX from GSF, ECP or even Citroen themselves can be a total nightmare. There seems to be 2 or 3 different parts they could have fitted for everything I ever had to order - pads, discs, balljoints etc. It's harder than getting the right parts for a 1987 Saab

900... ;-)

you may find that the caliper will leak now.

Eh? There's no hydraulic fluid anywhere near the bolt holes - it's a single piston sliding design. If it were a twin piston design that you can split in two, I'd be inclined to agree.

My local GSF takes your reg number and looks the parts up on line or something. They seem to have more details about my car than I do. Provided you haven't changed, say, the calipers for a different make they are remarkably accurate.

Sorry, I was having flashbacks to the old girling calipers which could be split, they always leaked afterwards.

Nevermind. It's turned out to be the way to do them anyway, as the normal bolts that just lift the caliper off are royally bolloxed.

My experience with the likes of GSF taking the numberplate has been good, however IME Citroens and Purrgeots from the 90s can be tricky.

I had a friend with a ZX. He resorted to tracing round his brake pads and touting that round parts departments and motor factors because no definitive list existed of what was fitted to his car. Usually he'd get a list of 3 or 4 possibles but it would be none of them.
