air flow meter modifications

hi, has anyone heard of drilling holes in the AFM box to help get more cold air into the AFM. Does it work to increase HP? Thanks

Miatas already run rich at wide-open throttle. Fooling the computer into making the mixture even richer won't help, even if you don't destroy the AFM in the process.

Ducting a supply of cool air to the airbox *will* help, though, especially in hot weather. Don't expect anything dramatic.

Hum.

Certainly advancing the timing a bit, and increasing octane if knock is heard.

The JR CAI is expensive and there have been quality complaints. I would examine the Randall on deja.com, miata.net, miataforum.com

On a 1999+, the thing to do seems to be putting in a header.

I have a 1990 and the JR is great. Would do it again in a minute. The quality issues must have been fixed and the cable is now an extention that plugs in. For a 1994+, probably would use the Monster flow with the cold air box from Brian Goodwin or similar. If money is the issue then that is another problem. You are on your own there. I have twice the initial price in upgrades already and it is still NA. Goes like stink around corners though. Like driving on rails. Light flywheel helps too but not good for stop and go.
