Second Generation Top Question

Apr 04, 2005 4 Replies

So I am feeling quite smug yesterday having swapped out the original top on my 97 with a top from an 02. Found the 02 top at the junkyard still on the frame with so the entire job took a little over 2 hours. The 02 top was already off the car and I have never been inside a 2nd generation so my question is where does the web strap that holds the middle top bow attach to? The top has what looks like a hole for a rivet to attach to but if thats where it goes I can't see how it works. Does anyone have a picture of what this looks like?

Thanks,

Michael

If you're talking about the straps that I think you are: there are two of them - they run down the inside of the top to the rain rail and attach to one of the built in bolts under the metal pieces. If that's not clear - and I'm pretty sure it's not - visit a friend with a newer Miata. That's what I ended up doing when installing the top from a '99 on my '93. Once you see them in a functional position, it becomes obvious.

Jim,

Thanks. My guess was they attached to one of the studs that hold the metal piece the that hold the top snug at its base and that the carpet attaches to. As I know no one with a newer car I may swing by the dealer on the way home.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Your description is better than mine, but then, I've only driven my Miata once since mid November. They do attache to the studs you mention. They just run from their attachment points along the inside of the top, straight to the studs.

Sorry about the bad quality. Hard to get exposure right with all that black.
