Mercedes 190e cutting out

Hello, as my merc 190e 2.0 auto was ticking over it suddenly cut out without warning, not even a splutter. Could not start it at all after that. 24 hours later i tried it and it fired up and cut out a couple of times before it ran fine again. Had it ticking over today again and when i slammed the bonnet shut it cut out again and wont start !! Any ideas folks ??

When you try to start engine, is the engine turning over?

The electric fuel pump is powered by a "fuel pump relay" (like a switch); these get "tired" after some years. The result is that the fuel flow (and engine) stops intermittently. Suggest you replace the fuel pump relay, especially if it's old.

Other, secondary possibility is another relay called the "overvoltage protection relay". It has a fuse on its top.

The engine turns over but it never sounds like it is going to 'catch'

Have listened for the fuel pump but it makes no noise when i turn on the ignition. Is the fuel pump relay located behind the battery?

"overvoltage protection relay"." It has a fuse on its top". - where abouts is this relay please ?

Fuel pump relay and the overload relay are both located behind your battery behind the cover.
