gears dropping out

hi there

Just thought you might be able to put my mind at rest regarding my 1971 MGBGT.

Of late the reverse gear appears to be popping out and I have to keep my hand on it to keep it engaged.

If this is not bad enough it appears to be spreading to other gears, 4th appears to be developing the problem.

I suspected the clutch but surely this just allows gear selection and is not responsible for holding the selected gears.

I have had the car 13 years now and have not experienced problems before - am I just lucky to get this far?

hope you can give me a few pointers to check out.

Cheers

If the car had extensive external linkage, this would be simple. Since that is not the case, I could only guess that the fork at the business end of your shifter has worn away, i.e. it is not fully engaging the gears in the first place. For your sake, I hope that's all it is.

Good luck,
