MGB Distributor

This is for any readers on the US side of the pond. I am in need of a distributor for my MGB daily-driver. The car is a 1978 which should have had a Lucas 45D but some previous owner had switched it out for a 25D so I am assuming that either one will work just as well.

Anybody got one they are willing to part with?

Just check the advance curve - RPM V's degree advance which is detailed in workshop manuals.

Might have been changed to make it run better and have advance which is different from the pollution setup. Does it have a Low or high compression - what other modifications does the car have?

This is maybe why it has been changed.

Basicly, some previous owner yanked all the pollution plunbing off the car and just plugged the holes. I assume he thought that it would all be just fine if he put the pre-pollution distributor in. Of course, there really is much more to it than that. It would likely have been better if he had not used a distributor that must have come from a junkyard somewhere. It is heavily corroded inside and really a mess. I am amazed the car ever ran.

I should also mention that the owner immediately previous to me was an older woman who put 2000 miles on the car in 15 years and that while everyone around here sings the praises of the guy who was maintaining it after seeing some of his handywork I wouldn't let him work on a Chevy.

A Chevy maybe incorrect that's some sort of car - should be a pushbike or billycart

And most likely its a low compression engine which you won't get any performance from. The cars that I've driven from there lacked anything until the carby and advance curves changed to the older cars specs.

Hi Bill,

Have you tried Moss Motors, or Victoria British? Both have websites and both carry 45D4 replacement dizzies.

What's the # on the dizzy you have? It's on the body near the vac unit. Mine, for instance is #41288. MG, etc., made lots of 25D dizzies with different curves and vac units.

BTW, join us on the MG list. Lots of enthusiasts there who know from MGs. To subscribe send an email to , in the body of the message type "subscribe mgs" without the quotes. You'll be in and we'll be glad to share.
