Should I....?

Persuaded SWMBO that I *need* to change the car, and since 16 I've wanted to get a Midget (aged 32 now!).

I have NO experience of maintaining a car (never even done an oil change on my car), and absolutely no experience of buying something that requires a technical eye - but having wanted one for half of my life, and now having some spare cash to buy with, its something I am determined to do.

So where do I start? I live in the NorthWest (between Chester and Warrington), can anyone recommend places where I could search for a car that is likely to have been well restored / maintained (I'm prepared to pay a reasonable premium to ensure that what I buy is a generally good egg).

From reading here and elsewhere, a 1275 / chrome Midget seems to be the

car of choice. I know its going to be a completely different ownership experience than the 1995 Fiesta 1.1 that I drive at the moment (unfortunately). Is there such a thing as a car buying "agent", that I could pay to go and find me a decent model (and haggle well on the price?) - I'm so aware of my shortcomings that again I'm prepared to have to pay something to get a decent model.

What do you reckon would be a good guide price for a decent model? I don't want to buy a "best in show" model, but I would at least want to be able to drive it away and expect to have 3 months of reasonably trouble free motoring.

What accessories are essential? I don't have a useable garage, so I'd happily use a cover (with all the caveats that that won't prevent rust as well as garaging it would).

Or am I biting off more than I should?

Lack of a garage is a problem as most well maintained cars are kept under cover and away from moisture likely to cause rust.

Having said that, I'm looking to sell my Midget. Price £4250. Its a 1974 round wheel arch, chrome, GAN5. Diamond white. No rust. Dry use only. Garaged under a dust cover. Minilite wheels, motolite steering wheel, head restraints, Sony radio, K&N air filters all Very good tyres ( including spare ) air horn, wax oiled. Photos available. registered with the MGOC and the MASC. Guaranteed Insurance valuation £4850

I haven't got the foggiest on the technical aspects, but on the 'err indoors front, I managed to sneak an MGF into the driveway...... I don't know if it'll help you but I used something along the lines of "I need a two seater soft top now otherwise it'll be too late and we'll be needing a 4 seater with a baby carrier and I'll be buggered until I'm older, have receeding hair and having a mid-life crisis. And I have wanted one since I was 16 and saw it on Top Gear for the first time so it's not just a phase I'm going through. Besides Love, they're so cheep now Rover have gone bust, it would have cost me as much to buy something boring like a Mondeo." That and the constant sulking.....

P.S. Try the guilt trip and buy a Matchbox model of one. Wrap it up and put it under the christmas tree for yourself with a label saying "To Matt from Santa". Then in bed at night when the missus is reading her new "Alan Titchmarsh" book sit there with it making "brum brum" noises and wheeling it across the duvet.

If that doesn't work I don't know what will. :)
