Be thankful you don't drive a Volvo v70

A collegue of mine has a 2001 v70 T5 wagon: nice car with lots of grunt. This morning the clutch slave started leaking, and the local Volvo dealer says k-ching $1700 please.

Apparently the slave ($200) is inside the transmission, and it has to be dropped (8 hours to R/R) to get at it. And while in there, its a good idea to (at only 150,000 km) replace the clutch too (another $650).

On our assorted 1G/2G, 4G etc Mitsus the slave is immediately accessible, costs about $60 and takes 1/2 hour labour to replace.

Persons with anti-Mitsu attitudes (you know who you are) should take note.

The slave in the box housing seems to be a Swedish thing as quite a few Saabs have this 'feature' too. The Volvo 850/v70 T5 is a very decent car, and its structural integrity and general durability and comfort is vastly superior to any Mitsushitty consumer excrement. Eight hours to R/R is excessive. Selling the poor guy a new clutch was probably not necessary as a visual inspection could determine its state of wear and hence estimate its remaining life. The throwout bearing should always be replaced though.

My wife is on her second Volvo. She takes it to the dealer for everything. Every time, at least it seems like it, that she takes it in, it cost $500-$700 dollars. Since she really does not appreciate me working on or fixing her car - I let her keep taking it in. Plus all tasks, including normal maintenance, takes special tools - even for something as simple as changing the oil!!!

People that buy Volvos expect to be involved in an accident, likely their fault.

Volvo: Swedish term meaning "to yawn"
