gas gage

i found out i can go another 30 miles after the fuel light comes on. well, the other day i had only gone 16 miles and it wouldnt start. (was out of gas)this does not make sense. anyone got any ideas? thanks

Light comes on, get gas. Light is supposed to indicate that. 30 miles was a fluke or highway speed.
