I used to love my 24v Senator, that happened to be an auto.
I detested my Clio 1.4, that happened to be an auto, albeit one totally s**te on fuel for the size of car.
I bought and scrapped a Rover 623 GSi that happened to be auto, a few weeks back, and was really impressed with the box.
My yank people carrier, was an auto, albeit one that I was glad to get rid of in the end, having read up on how they had a reputation for regularly destroying said transmission.
That aside, great to drive. :-)
Obviously when I say "dual carriageway" I'm referring to two lane autobahns, as cruising at over 80mph there is safe but doing it in the UK would single headedly cause the extinction of tigers.

Not really. He gave his cruising speed and I do consistently a large chunk faster than that (where the law permits).
And the petrol has more displacement.
As fuel to get it running, I reckon. You can spray a bit into the intake in really cold weather, or if you have really crappy fuel, to get them going. It's possible that the fuel was contaminated, after a few hours under the sea...
And then you drive a BMW 330d and you realise what a piss poor excuse for a car, the Golf 1.8 Turbo is.
Then you realise the only rear drive car in this class is the 1 series, and decide lifes to short to drive a car that ugly.
But you drove a Rover 600 !

What about all the huge numbers of NA Petrol engines (ie, most Petrol engines) in the world ? Are you saying you can't compare them to Diesels at all ?
Blatently you can. If you're buying a car, you can usually choose an NA Petrol or a Turbo Diesel. Clearly you can compare the two !
But the Petrol usually *isn't* turbo'd. That's the whole point here :)
The 1 series only has the one decent engine and that's a TDi.

Then you drive an SLR and realise just how slow the BMW is.
And then you drive the M3 and realise why M don't do diesels.
Well, they both have 200bhp. Diesel makes more torque (because it's making it's 200bhp at *much* lower rpm) so it'll probably have better in-gear times. Overtaking in 5th gear, would be quicker in the Diesel. 0-60 would be a bit quicker in the Petrol car - but in the real-world, it's never done.
No, because the Diesel specifically has a 6-speed box, and is geared appropriately. Yes, if you want to make maximum progress, you'll have to change gear more - but that's not gonna make much of a dint in your A to B times :)
Parked next to an SLR a couple of weeks ago - was shocked as to how small they are - that's a lot of money for such a little car. I reckon you'd get
90% there with an SLK and some engine mods (the V8 fits in the new SLK), and have the benefit of a folding roof as well!

The forced induction is already there on the Diesel, for free. It's not there on the V6. The end :)
