All of us have that possibility, all of us can do that but it is either a work of a lifetime or a work which requires high resources and a little book with the correct phone-numbers.

There are some who make money of it but it remains selling steel for the price of gold, which is a business very linked to a world where cash is easily made.

It seems but yesterday that Marcos and TVR had a delivery date 4-5 years after you ordered one because all the flash city boys of London Stock Exchange wanted one, both makes are either into the doldrumms or below.

An sorted Mk2 with 260 Hp, a straightcut box and an Atlas 5-linked rear will destroy on any terrain -circuit, gravel, street, dirt- anything Alfa can throw at it. Those Fords have engaged and won on terrains Alfa didn't even dare to consider.

Hell: they still do. Every historic rally is full of them and in capable hands they fight the scratch times of the Groupe N Scoobs, Evo's and Cosworths. Alfa's I dare say, are rarely, close to never, seen there.

Everything, to the last bolt and nut, of the MK2 Escort can still be found; modifications, proven and tested, are off the shelve. Ordered and paid now, tomorrow delivered.

Your needs? What are they anyway? More brakes on your 75? If the 75 were as good and popular as the Mk2 Escort was and still is, you would have a range of options, distributors and for competitif prices.

By now you know allready how much choice / pricing you have for yours...

I like the 75 but liking it does not come with degrading or ridiculising other cars whose palmares counts more pages than errors on "good" Alfa's.

Surely there are better Italian cars than the Mk2 Escort but based on price/performance there are none.

Yes, several different brands of performance discs ranging between 80 quid a pair and well over 200 quid a pair. That's not exactly out of proportion with the market.

Calipers don't need touching, 'cos they're Brembo twin-pots anyway.

But we're not making comparisons. I was just pointing out that being able to afford one or not, a MkII Scrote wouldn't have a place in my garage, because I can't see any circumstances under which I'd need one.

Oh yes, but whereas some people can take apart a classic racing machine and put it back together with ease, I think my magnum opus in this area is likely to be limited to a restored 1982 Honda CG125 (The unrefurbished version is sat in my garage right now!). But it doesn't hurt to have little dreams.

I'd wanna drive it afterwards though as well :-p

Steve needs to be an unpaid taxi driver for his company so anything other than a bland repmobile that his boss will OK is unsuitable.

Um, no it didn't. It may have won a rally or two but *nothing* compared to the Mk2 Escort. Absolutely nothing.

The Fiat wasn't as reliable, as strong, or as good a handling car.

One day you should perhaps try one. The Mk2 Escort is still one of the best handling cars ever built - bar none.

It's also why the Mk1 and Mk2 Escort are beating everything in the historic rallying events now. There are a few Porsche 911s that are competing with the Escorts, but no Fiats.

I believe Mirafiori drivers won the championship more than MkII Escort drivers did.

That's because the Fiat was a rarity, even non-works Gp.4 Mirarioris are 'HFM!'.

Regardless, I really can't see a MkII Escort shaped hole in my life, despite the fact that I love the RS2000.

I've had lots of Mk2 RS2000s and I regret selling every one.
