Back off the road

First proper outing in the Rover and the gear linkage went :(

So the car's now stuck in 4th - it's just about drivable (gotta love that v8 torque) which meant I could get it to a pub car park where I could wait for recovery whilst sinking a few pints. So now I've gotta try and find a workshop manual so I can try and figure out what's gone wrong with it.

Although, if it means taking the box out it'll be a good opportunity to find a decent replacement to put in (current box is a bit whiney!) and also to fix the speedo drive.

The joys of 25 year old Rover ownership!!

i'm sure there's an old haynes manual for an SD1 at work in the cupboard full of s*it. if no one has bothered to clear it out it should be there still. i'll look on tuesday and post it to you if it is dude.

Cheers mate - I've already got the Haynes manual but it doesn't give too much info about the gearchange assembly. I need the proper Rover workshop manual which apparently gives a lot more info! Let me know what Haynes it is though, might be a better version that mine!

It's a SD1. There is no gear linkage AFAIR - the stick goes straight into the selector.

We still have the MG Rover computery stuff here, no idea if it goes back that far tho

Well yeah, but there's a link between the gear stick and selector shaft. I'm guessing that the bolt has come off/snapped that holds them together. I was hoping to get under the car to have a look today but crappy weather has put paid to that. Reading theough the rather vague info in the HBOL it looks like it may just be a case of unbolting the prop and removing the bottom cover of the remote gearchange assembly to access it, but we'll see!

There's the possibility that the little ball bearing which acts as a "lock" has worn flat and got jammed.

As I expected the little pin/nut has come off that connects to 2 selector shafts. New pin £3.75, new nut £0.25. Nice!

The whole gearchange assembly came off pretty easy. Managed to manauvere the whole lot round the prop and exhausts. Gives me chance to replace the mounting bushes with new poly ones which will hopefully take up some of the slack in the gearchange.

Just gotta wait for the parts to turn up now!
